The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), established in 1949 through the North Atlantic Treaty, is a military alliance of 32 countries from Europe and North America. NATO plays a vital role in addressing international security issues through joint military operations. Its main objective is to protect the freedom and security of its member nations. But over the years, NATO’s responsibilities have expanded to include cybersecurity, crisis management, counterterrorism, disaster response, and cooperative security with partner nations worldwide. Using military drills and intelligence sharing along with multinational missions, NATO aims to deter threats and promote stability. NATO is not part of the United Nations, but the two bodies work together to address global security challenges and support peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.
